Free School Meals
Below is a summary of the new criteria for FSM, due to government changes made to eligibility from 1st September 2026.
Key Eligibility Categories
- Universal Credit Expansion: The previous household income cap of £7,400 has been removed for Universal Credit recipients. Free school meals are now divided into two groups:
- Targeted Free School Meals (TFSM): For households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings of £7,400 or less.
- Expanded Free School Meals: A new category for households receiving Universal Credit with annual earnings above £7,400.
- Other Qualifying Benefits: Children whose parents or carers receive support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, or the guarantee element of Pension Credit also remain eligible.
- No Recourse to Public Funds: Children from certain families with no recourse to public funds may still qualify, subject to specific criteria.
